Lay Acupuncturists

Perhaps you are a layperson with no previous medical experience, but hunger to do something valuable in the field of health care? Do not feel that it is out of your reach!

Today, people from all walks of life are taking up the study of complementary medicine. TCM and Acupuncture are probably the most thoroughly evaluated and respected of the medical systems currently lying outside the umbrella of strict orthodoxy.

The World Health Organisation has been supporting research both in China and abroad and helping in the process of collation of information and standardisation of nomenclature since the early 1980’s. In Ireland, the Health Board has been in the process of laying the groundwork for eventual state registration of acupuncturists since 2003.

Medical Acupuncturists - Enhancing Existing Practices

Perhaps you are already working in the field of professional health care, as a Doctor, Physiotherapist, Osteopath, Chiropractor, Dentist or Masseuse etc. If so, you will certainly find as so many others have in diverse fields, that a practical knowledge of acupuncture will greatly enhance your ability to evaluate and deal with a multitude of common problems, ranging in nature from musculo-skeletal, to internal and psychological.

Our Principal, Dr. John O. Bourke is a practicing GP (family doctor) and a respected medical advisor to a number of Irish organizations. Despite his having been rather skeptical in the earlier stages of researching acupuncture as a viable addition to his professional skill-set, it was on basis of the excellent clinical results he immediately began to experience on commencing practice that Acupuncture School Ireland was eventually founded.

Members of our faculty have been training medical professionals in Acupuncture for twenty years and our college has continued to do so since its formation in 1994. We currently run a dedicated course for Medical Professionals structured according to the specific WHO guidelines regarding those already holding medical science degrees.

Ancient and Modern

The acupuncture treatment procedures used in Chinese hospitals today, have been practised and accurately documented since before the time of Christ. They are still just as remarkable, swift and sure in their action now as they were thousands of years ago. This has been demonstrated in numerous trials conducted over the past several decades under modern scientific controls.

New Urgency

There has been a disturbing increase in the incidence of progressive chronic diseases and unmanageable infections in the West, despite impressive advances in modern medicine. The need for a broader range of prevention and treatment methods has reached the point of urgency. Traditional Chinese Medicine is rapidly gaining a reputation amongst the medical profession and the public alike for its capacity to play a very significant, complimentary role in modern health care.

World Health Organisation

As mentioned above, the World Health Organisation was quick to recognised the important role of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in global health care and has been working with the Chinese for many years on the clarification and standardisation of Chinese medical methodology, terminology etc.

In order to facilitate the study and regulation of TCM, the WHO has a long established collaborative relationship with China's most prestigious college, the Nanjing University of TCM. One example of the outcome of this liason was collaborative study conducted in India under the direction of the WHO, which revealed the very significant contribution acupuncture can make in the management of tropical epidemic diseases such as Asiatic cholera.

Acupuncture School Ireland

Acupuncture School Ireland (ASI), is registered as "The College of Medical Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine Ltd." (CMATCM)

Our senior lecturer in TCM, Mr. Bruce W. Du Vé, is a graduate of advanced study programs at the above mentioned Nanjing University of TCM. and has also participated in the transliteration and preparation of medical texts for publication there.

Discussions regarding the need to extend the influence of world standard TCM training into Europe were begun in China in 1987, and Acupuncture School Ireland was finally established in 1994 as an affiliate of the Nanjing University of TCM under the name of The European College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ECTCM). The name was later changed to CMATCM.

CMATCM is now operated from a dedicated premises in Ballycasey Park, Shannon, just one mile from the Shannon international airport. We at CMATCM are honoured to have Dr. Yang Gongfu, Director of the Nanjing University of TCM, as our honorary President.

Primary Health Care

Acupuncturists are understood by the public to be primary health care practitioners. What does this mean? Simply, that they will be consulted by people from all walks of life, as a first or last resort, to help them solve health problems of every conceivable type, both acute and chronic. Such a role bears with it an imposing responsibility, as well as an extraordinary opportunity to expand the range of treatment currently available to the community.

Acupuncture School Ireland has a policy of promoting safe and ethical treatment. Our graduates are trained as complimentary practitioners to collaborate with other mainstream health professionals. Our aim is to equip them with a skill-set that will enable them to participate in the ongoing expansion and development of community health care systems.
